As with every new generation of consoles, it all begins with a lengthy questioning phase. Which unit will I choose? Then a long stage of study begins, during which I read the various tests, comparisons and opinions of the players.
I have to admit, after falling for the first Xbox, I then returned to the world of Playstation, with PS3 and then PS4. So when Microsoft and Sony announced the Xbox and PS5, the choice wasn’t easy. But after careful consideration, I decided to leave the Japanese to travel to the United States. What conclusions can be drawn after one year of experience? This is my opinion.
be careful ! Far from me reviving the war of sympathy. This testifies to my personal experience. Also, this paper is completely subjective.
Why did you buy the Xbox Series X?
Usually, I don’t buy next-gen controllers during the first weeks of marketing. But the context of scarcity and (in particular) the noise that moved me to this generation rocked my habits. So I shortened the thinking stage before moving to Xbox Series X.
Why this model? First, to change. After 10 years in the Playstation world, I wanted a change. You’re sick of the Japanese console interface, the feel of playing with the DualShock 4, and Sony’s politics that, let’s face it, get you to get your hands on the wallet.
At the same time, I’ve seen Xbox users praise the console’s advantages as being more comfortable. Above all, US console fans kept talking about Xbox Game Pass, a type of video game on Netflix. So I turned to Xbox Series X., more powerful than the S series but also equipped with a 4K UHD Blu-ray player that is very useful for the Blu-ray consumer that I am.
Navigating a new interface also affected the scale, as did the console design, which I found to be much more than I liked. Not to mention the size of the device, which is more compact than the PS5.
Finally, I have to say that the ads for PS5 exclusives weren’t too many. So I told myself I could try the Xbox adventure and wait for the catalog of PS5 exclusives to expand to switch to the digital edition model. The health crisis requires, after several weeks of patience and the loss of some sales, I ended up buying the Xbox Series X.
What kind of player am I?
Before getting to the heart of the matter, it seems to me important to specify that I am not a hardcore gamer. My choice of game is mainly focused on the big licenses (Fifa, Call of Duty, Last of Us, Halo, etc.) and a few pieces I’ve heard about in the niche media ratings. Basically, I’m what you call a normal player, a very key player.
So I don’t play every day but a few hours a week when I have some free time. Apart from first person shooter games and sports games, I’m mostly interested in the stories and worlds of the games I play. These aspects are essential to me. Of course, gameplay plays an important role in my gaming experience.
It is also possible for these reasons that I spent many years on Playstation, as Sony’s catalog has combined many games that meet my criteria.
By purchasing the Xbox Series X, I told myself that I was losing the games accumulated on Playstation for years. But having a Game Pass allowed me to discover and try other games without risking bankruptcy each time. So it didn’t make sense for me to offer me Series X without being tied to a Game Pass subscription.
Xbox Game Pass, mon amour
The releases of the next generation games have not arrived for quite some time, so I decided to get into the wonderful world of Game Pass. I didn’t have the budget to buy back the (non-exclusive) games I had on PS4. Also, I felt like paying a little more 130 euros to access the catalog of hundreds of games was an interesting investment (Especially when you know that one PS5 game costs €70/80).
It requires containment, so I was able to enjoy installing games I already knew but also savoring the joy of trying other games without financial stress. For a little over a year I was able to dig as I please from a well-stocked catalog and Discover some pieces I wasn’t interested in before.
And at the rate that Microsoft is moving forward, Game Pass is getting more and more attention. In my opinion, it even represents the future of video games, especially since with my Ultimate offering I can also play my games on the go thanks to xCloud, Microsoft’s cloud gaming service, from my Mac or iPad. delight.
In addition to the great licenses that I’m used to, I was able to discover excellent games like Back4Blood or Twelve Minutes. I also found out that it took two, voted it the best game of the year, and is available on Game Pass at the end of 2021. I think I wouldn’t have enjoyed Xbox Series X as much without Game Pass. This subscription led me to play more than once, with more fun, like I was in my teens.

My opinion after a year with Xbox Series X
Before proceeding with the purchase, I must admit that I had some doubts about the experience that awaited me. I left a world I knew, decided to leave dozens of games on the shelf and no longer had the opportunity to play online with my friends, all of them still PS4 owners.
Finally, I do not regret my choice at all. The Xbox interface is much more pleasing to me than that of the Playstation, the console is more ergonomic and comfortable, and Xbox Game Pass with xCloud is undoubtedly the biggest Xbox asset.
And things are unlikely to change. Microsoft announced its acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. A historic process that will change the video game landscape. By choosing the Xbox Series X, I made the best choice of this generation of consoles. And the fact that my friends ended up doing the same confirms my choice.
This doesn’t mean I’m not interested in PS5. When my money allows, I’ll probably indulge in the PS5 Digital Edition, just to play console-exclusive games. So I still have plenty of time, especially as the shortage is on track to continue into 2023.
